Converting/Making Paper and Pen Games

There are many different games which can be played with just Paper & Pen or Paper & Pencil. Beyond the the classic paper and pen games, you can convert many traditional games into paper and pen. Some converted games require a change in game dynamics/rules, while some can be played by simply using symbols on paper instead of 3 dimensional game tokens.

Game Tokens

Instead of game pieces, there are a number of ways to mark your moves:

  • ''s and 's'

  • ''s and ''s - great for games which use a Go Board and Go Stones

  • Simple symbols: θ φ χ ψ ∆⃝⃞⃟⃠ ∞ ❤ ♦ ♢ # ≉ ⊗⊕⊖⊜⊘⊙⊚⊛⊝☺☹ ⊠⊞⊟⊡ ㆀ + × ✔〤〷 ✴ ★

  • Colored Pens: Black vs. Blue vs. Red vs. Green
  • Player initials

  • Stick figures

Capturing and Moving

Many traditional board games allow you to captures pieces and move tokens all around the place. This can be a challenge with paper and pen games, but you may consider a few options:

  • use a dry erase board

  • use gentle pencil marks and a good eraser

  • Instead of removing a mark, cross it out. This area can no long be occupied/reoccupied.

  • Change the way the game is played so that marks can not be removed from board.

  • write very small in the squares so that you can cross out old marks and write in new ones - acceptable when reoccupying a space is necessary but uncommon.

  • Give up on the Paper and Pen only concept for that game and use game pieces

Sprouts

The game is played by two players, starting with a few spots drawn on a sheet of paper. Players take turns, where each turn consists of drawing a line between two spots (or from a spot to itself) and adding a new spot somewhere along the line. The players are constrained by the following rules.

  • The line may be straight or curved, but must not touch or cross itself or any other line.

  • The new spot cannot be placed on top of one of the endpoints of the new line. Thus the new spot splits the line into two shorter lines.

  • No spot may have more than three lines attached to it. For the purposes of this rule, a line from the spot to itself counts as two attached lines and new spots are counted as having two lines already attached to them.

Black Box aka LOGO and ORGO

The goal is to take turn finding the 4-5 hidden 'black boxes' on a 8x8 grid. One player (Hider) marks hidden location of 'black box' on that players grid. The opponent player (Seeker) then calls out a number from around that players grid. The Hider then reports back what happened when a 'x-ray' was emitted from that spot. If it is a direct hit, the x-ray is absorbed and doesn't return. If the path of the x-ray is adjacent to anther hidden 'black box', the path of the x-ray is changed 90 degrees away from the adjacent black box. If the x-ray come in contact with another black box or travels adjacent to another before it hits the edge of the playing field, it is absorbed or the path of the x-ray is again redirected.

The goal is to find the location of the hidden black boxes with the fewest amount of x-rays.

  • the player with the largest group of stones on the board must put 2 stones of his color per turn

  • the player without the largest group must either put 3 stones per turn or pass. The player may not place his stones such that at the end of the turn his largest group is the same size as his opponent's largest group.

Go is one of the most incredible games of all time. The rules are simple, yet game play and strategy can be quite complex.

One of the key dynamics of Go is the ability to captures stones or even self capture your own pieces. This makes game play difficult with paper and pen, unless you are able to easily erase your marks. And although the original game of Go can be played with paper and pencil (or erasable pen), there are many versions of go which are much better suited for paper and pen, where marks can be left permanently on your 'board'.

Sensei's Library - Go - Paper and Pencil Version

The rules are exactly those of Go, with the following exceptions:

  • Surrounded stones are not captured, but just marked. Points occupied by marked stones count as territory for the surrounding player, but neither player can play on them for the remainder of the game. This implies that any group which touches a marked stone is unconditionally alive.

  • Suicide is allowed, i.e., you can make a play such that one or more of your own stones, including the one you just played, become marked.

  • Area scoring is used.

Capture Go aka Atari Go, first-capture go, the capture game, or Ponnuki-G

Capture Go is a very simplified version of Go where the goal is to be the first to capture a predetermined number of your opponent's pieces. This can be a first capture game where the first person to capture a piece wins, or it can be a multiple capture game. When the experience/age of players is significantly different, you can impose a handicap were the more skilled play must capture more pieces to achieve victory.

Play the Paper Game War

This game uses a combination of:

  • ranged fire (3 inch max)
  • paper folding
  • point to point firing

Many of us played these versions of Paper War in school between classes.

  1. Fold a sheet of paper in half

  2. Each person sketches a number of little unit icons (planes, soldiers, tanks, spacecraft, etc.) on their side

  3. On your turn, draw a dot on your half of the paper with a pencil

  4. Fold the paper an half again so that the two drawn sides are in contact with each other

  5. Rub the back side of the paper over the dot so that the dot is transferred to your opponent's side

  6. If the transferred dot touches an enemy unit, it is destroyed

  7. The goal is generally to destroy all of your opponent's units first

  8. Alternate rules include:

    1. movement via pencil flick

    2. limited range of attack from each unit

    3. medic/repair units

    4. heavy weapons which make for larger dots

    5. mix of paper flick attack if units get within range or with specialty units such as aircraft

    6. Some units get multiple hits before being destroyed

    7. Mines and obstacles - either stop movement or destroys unit if unit moves into it

In first decade of the 21st centry, Donald Seagraves compiled an impressive list of free print and play games which he called the Canonical List of Free Print-and-Play Games. This was once available atrunestoneit.com paper games (WebArchive), but this website seems to have disappeared somewhere around 2008. The following information (with some editing) was from that site:

Abs--Trac-Toe

Designer: Jonathan Leistiko

Publisher:Invisible City Productions

A winnable variant of Tic-Tac-Toe for two modern artists.

Object: To earn territory points by claiming adjacent territories on a semi-randomly created board.

One player draws an irregularly-shaped figure on the paper. That player must divide it into nine sections by drawing two horizontal and two vertical lines. The other player gets to draw one line. This line must start and end at an outside edge. Starting with the player who did not draw the bending line, take turns marking vacant spaces, one at a time. The game ends when there are no vacant spaces left to fill.

Anansi

Designer: Daniel Solis

Publisher:Luchacabra

An abstract game for 2 to 4 players inspired by Tibetan sand mandalas and named after a mythic spider from African folk tales.

Equipment:

  • a go board

  • a uniquely colored set of 32 stones for each player

  • a deck of cards with a 'web' drawn on each

(In lieu of this, you can also play with just pencils and a sheet of grid paper, but you'll still need the deck of cards.)

Each player draws a card and keeps the web pattern secret from his opponent(s). Each player takes turns placing one of his stones on the intersections of the grid (only the center 12'12 grid on the go board is used.) Your goal is to recreate the web pattern on your card by placing your stones on the board. Once a stone is placed, it cannot be moved. It is possible that the webs two players wish to create will overlap, in which case it becomes a race to see who can capture those intersections first. Points are scored based on whether the stone placed is in alignment with your web or one of your opponent's web, with more points being scored for stones that are placed in alignment with your web.

The game ends when all players have used all their stones. The winner is whoever gets the most points at the end of the game.

Battleship(s)

- Sink your opponent's fleet before he sinks yours in this classic public domain pen and paper game.

'Battleship is a guessing game played by two people. Although popularized in the United States as a commercial board game, first published by the Milton Bradley Company in 1931, it is known throughout the world as a pencil and paper game and predates the First World War in this form.'

This game is played on four 10x10 grids (two per player). One grid per player is used to hide his 'fleet', while the other grid is used to track shots made at the opponent. Each player is trying to eliminate his opponent's fleet first.

Box Hex - A Hex variant on a three-dimensional 'boxed' topology -- be the first to connect your two opposite segments with a continuous line of colored-in circles.

di.fc.ul.pt/~jpn/gv/Box Hex.pdf (rules and board)

marksteeregames.com/Box Hex rules.pdf (rules only)

marksteeregames.com/Box Hex board.pdf (board only)

Box Hex is a variant ofHex, a game invented by Piet Hein in 1942 and independently by John Nash in 1948 ,that has been adapted to a three dimensional surface - a box.

In Box Hex, the shortest paths of connection travel around the outside of the board - not through the center. There are four such paths: two for each player. This solves the strong first move advantage problem of regular Hex, where you have only one shortest path, said path being shared by both players. There's no need for the pie rule in Box Hex.

In Box Hex, as in regular Hex, one connection must exist in a filled board, and opposing connections cannot exist simultaneously. There is a pentagon in each of the six bottom corners of the box. An asymmetric board was chosen for Box Hex to make the game a little more complicated.

Each player attempts to connect his two opposite segments with a continuous line of colored-in circles (in his designated color).

Boxes (aka Capture, Dots and Dashes) - The classic pencil and paper games where players take turns connecting dots that are horizontally or vertically adjacent, trying to complete squares.

Boxes is a two player game played on a grid of dots. The players take turns connecting dots that are horizontally or vertically adjacent. If a player can complete a square by connecting two dots then they capture that square. You must draw another line after making a capture. A player may, thus, make a large number of captures in a single turn. After the last capture he must still connect two dots.

Christmas Lights - It's nice to spruce up the Christmas tree with light even if your brothers and sisters are a little competitive about it. This year you'll show them how to do it right.

Designer: David E. Whitcher

Publisher:PyroMyth Games

It's nice to spruce up the Christmas tree with light even if your brothers and sisters are a little competitive about it. This year you'll show them how to do it right.

To play you will need to print out the game sheet and have a different colored pencil or crayon for each player. The board represents a Christmas tree the bulbs on it and the wires that join them.

On his turn a player will do one of two things -- 1) Color in any bulb not already part of a string of lights or 2) Continue a string of lights. This is done by coloring in a wire from a bulb of your color to another unclaimed bulb coloring it in.

Continue until there are no more bulbs to be claimed. Then the tree is scored -- one point for each bulb, one point for each wire.

Copolymer - A paper-and-pencil game where players take turns coloring in cells on a paper board, at least one cell per turn. When a 'connection' is formed you must color in at least one more cell while it is still your turn. Once the board fills up, the player who has claimed the majority of cells wins.

Designer: Mark Steere

Publisher:Mark Steere Games

Copolymer is an ultra simple game for two players. A printed paper 'board,' a pen of one color, and a pen of another color can be used to play. Any honeycomb patterned grid with an odd number of cells can be used. Players take turns coloring in cells on the (initially empty) board, at least one cell per turn. Players are not allowed to pass on their turn. A 'connection' is formed when you color in a cell adjacent to two opposing cells (that is, adjacent to each of at least two of your opponent's cells). Having formed a connection, you must color in at least one more cell while it is still your turn. Your turn concludes when you color in a non-connecting cell. Once the board fills up, the player who has claimed the majority of cells wins.

Cube Digger - A three-dimensional seek-and-find game for two players. Object: To find your opponent's treasure chest and return to your home base without getting blown up.

Designer: Jonathan Leistiko

Publisher:Invisible City Productions

A three-dimensional seek-and-find game for two players.

Object: To find your opponent's treasure chest and return to your home base without getting blown up.

The game is played on game sheets that represent a three-dimensional playing area. Each player has his own sheet, while a third sheet is placed face-up on the table. This is the common map. You have one treasure chest and eight bombs to place on the playing field. Secretly choose an unoccupied square that that is on the same level as your home base for your treasure chest. Once you've placed your treasure chest, secretly place eight bombs by marking their locations on your private map.

On your turn, you have three choices of what you can do: step, scan, or defuse. Using these actions, you attempt to find your opponent's home base (where his treasure chest is.)

If you end your turn in your home square while carrying your opponent's treasure chest, then you win the game.

Fattoria - Gasp! What's up? A group of pretty animals have lost their colors, will you help them come back out?

Publisher:Kidult

Gasp! What's up? A group of pretty animals have lost their colors, will you help them come back out? And why don't you invite your friends and play all together to see who is the fast colored of the world?

Each kid chooses an animal to color up and lays it on the table in front of himself. At his turn each kid throws a dice and colors up that part of the animal which is marked by the number on the dice. If that number corresponds to a colored portion he waits for his next turn and it's up to the child next. The winner is the one who colors up all of his animal first.

Five Sides - Five sides is a throw back to your early days of playing games. When all you had was a pen, some paper, and time to kill during study hall.

Designer: Tyler Tinsley

From the

'Five Sides is a throw back to your early days of playing games. When all you had was a pen, some paper, and time to kill during study hall. Players take turns dividing a box with a single line, trying to make five sided shapes. There is also a way to score bonus points. A surprisingly simple game that will have you thinking twice before you draw that next line.'

Rules for this game are available from the game'sBGG entry.

Ghoulash - An action-adventure game for two players, played entirely on paper.

Designer: Mike Suchcicki

GHOULASHTM, The Last Game on Earth.

For this game, you won't need batteries, extra RAM, an AC adapter, joysticks or video accelerators. That's because GHOULASHTM isn't like most other games you've played before. It's an action-adventure game for two players, played entirely on paper. Yes, that's right. It's not a computer game, not a video game. The only hardware you need is a pencil.

GHOULASHTM has one set of basic rules used over a variety of scenarios, each of which offers its particular twist.

While the rules and a sample scenario are available for free at the GHOULASH site, other scenarios can be purchased in booklets of pre-printed charts. The cost is $6.95 for enough charts to play 12 games (four each of three different scenarios).

Hangman - The classic public domain pen and paper game. One player thinks of a word and the other tries to guess it by suggesting letters.

From theWikipedia entry:

'Hangman is a paper and pencil guessing game for two players. One player thinks of a word and the other tries to guess it by suggesting letters.

'The word to guess is represented by a row of dashes, giving the number of letters. If the guessing player suggests a letter which occurs in the word, the other player writes it in all its correct positions. If the suggested letter does not occur in the word, the other player draws one element of the hangman diagram. The game is over when:

  • The guessing player completes the word, or guesses the whole word correctly

  • The other player completes the diagram

'This diagram is, in fact, designed to look like a hanging man. Although debates have arisen about the questionable taste of this picture, it is still in use today.'

Jam Doodle - One part art, one part communication. For two or more players. Object: To describe a drawing composed of basic figures accurately enough that your partner can draw it.

Designer: Jonathan A. Leistiko

Publisher:Invisible City Productions

One part art, one part communication. For two or more players.

Giochi da fare con carta e penna

Object: To describe a drawing composed of basic figures accurately enough that your partner can draw it.

You Need: Paper and pencil for each player. A small sketch pad works better than 8.5 x 11, but any paper will do.

There are two roles in Jam Doodle: creator/describer and drawer. During the game, you will take turns swapping roles. When you're the describer, choose a doodle and begin describing it to your partner. When you're the drawer, try to draw your partner's doodle as accurately as possible from the description.

When both of you agree that you're done, turn around and compare the doodle to the copy that was just drawn.

  • If the copy is an accurate duplication of the original, then you've accomplished your goal. It's okay if the copy is drawn to a different scale, as long as the ratios between the objects are accurate.

  • If the copy differs from the original, then take some time to discuss where it differs, why it differs, and what information could have made it come out differently.

Once you're done, swap roles and start again.

Several variants to the basic rules are available on the website as well.

KromoSauri - Who knows which color dinosaurs were? Nobody! So have fun and color them as you wish! Rules to 6 different games that can be played with the included dinosaur picture cards.

Designer: Angelo Porazzi

Publisher:Kidult

Who knows which color dinosaurs were? Nobody! So have fun and color them as you wish! Dear children, dear parents, who is writing these words has designed the animals you see, he is the father of three wonderful daughters Alessia, Alice and Michela who, like all the other children, are always searching for something new to do and to learn from. These unpublished images and these games are inspired at Bookgames a series of books designed to help parents grow with their children in a more simple way, more profitable and fun: PLAYING WITH THEM.

These games aim at those children that, in most cases, can not read yet or they are learning. That is why every character on a colored pedestal has a big initial and a name completely written with capital letters. Children love to play: that is why every picture to be cut can become a playing card, or it can be folded along the base so that it stands and be played with.

The Kromosauri game includes 54 pictures to cut, one colored series of (27), one black and white series of (27) (that you can color yourself) and a series of (27) presentation cards with a brief story where the character presents himself. There are also the rules to 6 different games to able you to use the picture cards you have cut.

Thanks to this material you could have fun with your children getting them involved (and getting yourself involved) by playing with one of the 6 games offered (or you could make up new ones)

Maven - Every player is given the same 25 letters, in the same order, and they compete to make the most of them.

Designer: Prof. Marcelo Epstein

Equipment: Each player needs a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.

On each piece of paper, draw a 5x5 grid of squares. The first player calls out a letter. Each player writes that letter into one of the 25 available squares. Moving clockwise, the next player then calls out a letter (which may be the same as or different than any letter previously called out). Each player then writes that letter into one of the remaining squares. Repeat this until 25 letters have been called. All 25 squares will be filled on every player's grid.

Words in each column and each row are scored -- the longer the word, the bigger the score. Highest overall score wins.

Maven originated in Argentina and was introduced to North America by Dr. Marcelo Epstein, an Engineering professor at the University of Calgary.

Middleman - Players take the part of traders dealing in tins of some commodity -- buy and sell with the object of ending the game with more money than your competitors.

Designer: Eric Solomon

There are a lot of games which simulate market demand and supply, but this is the only one I know of that achieves this in a way that will satisfy paper & pencil purists. Middleman's designer Eric Solomon wrote in Games With Pencil And Paper:

Since dice are not acceptable in true pencil-and-paper games the market figures are decided by adding together numbers privately chosen by the players at the start of the game.

An interesting feature of this is that a certain amount of prediction is possible on the basis of the order of the numbers (the digits 0 to 9 can be used once each) you have selected and those revealed so far by your opponents. This opens the way for skillful players to recognize which rounds provide buyer's markets and which provide seller's markets, and trade accordingly.

Players take the part of traders dealing in tins of some worthy commodity, say tuna. Each starts with a fixed sum of money and then buys and sells tins of the product with the object of ending the game with more money than his or her competitors.

Net Y - A variant of the game Y, there are three superimposed, interdependent instances of Y which are played simultaneously.

Designer: Mark Steere

Publisher:Mark Steere Games

'Net Y' is an acronym for Nested Tetrahedrons Y. It is a two player game. A printed paper 'board,' a pen of one color, and a pen of another color can be used to play. The original game ofY was first described by Claude Shannon in the early 1950's, and independently reinvented around the same time by Craige Schensted and Charles Titus. Mark Steere created this variant of Y on March 31, 2006. In Net Y, there are three superimposed, interdependent instances of Y which are played simultaneously.

The three games of Y, each represented by its own highlighted triangle, are played simultaneously. The player who wins the majority of them wins overall. In each game of Y, players attempt to join the three sides of the given triangle with continuous linked paths of colored in circles (in the players' own designated colors). The sides must be connected by points inside the triangle (as viewed in two dimensions), including its highlighted perimeter.

Pipelayer - A pen and paper game played with two grids of dots that are slightly offset from one another. To win, a player must make a continuous connection from one side of the board to the other.

Pipelayer is a game played with two grids of dots that are slightly offset from one another. The long dimension should be one longer than the short dimension.

The players take turns moving by connecting two dots. A player can only connect dots that are adjacent horizontally or vertically and also only dots of his own color. No move may draw across another move. To win a player must make a continuous connection from one side of the board to the other in the long direction for his color of dots.

PocketCiv - A Solitaire Civization game that's compact enough to play on a plane. Hopefully. Well, maybe not, but it's close..in it's most basic form. Winner of The Gone Gaming 2006 Board Game Internet Awards: Best Downloadable Board Game

Designer: Scott Slomiany

It should be noted here that since this is a solitaire game, the system is fairly open-ended to interpretation, and how you want to play it. For example, while in the following 'Build Your World' section, it talks about creating a single Frontier area; there's nothing that prevents you from breaking up the Frontier into two areas, which would give you two Sea areas, as if your Empire is in the middle of a peninsula. It's your world, feel free to play with it as much as you like. Looking at the scenario maps will give you an idea how varied you can make your world.

However, your first play should conform fairly close to these given rules, as the rules and events on the cards pertain to these rules. So, when you go off and explore alternate rules from the one provided below, knowing how the cards operate will give you some understanding of how far off you can deviate. So, if you want to create a set of islands with no Frontier, fine. But you will need to figure out some way to handle the cases of when something happens that requires a Frontier.

If you are playing the bare-bones PocketCiv version, you will be using the pad of paper to draw your map, and keep track of important data. You can draw the map on half the sheet of paper, and use the other half for data tracking; or you can use a full sheet for your map, and then use the second sheet of paper in your pad for data tracking. It's all up to you!

When using the basic pen-and-pencil edition, you will be marking, crossing out marks, erasing, and mutilating the paper in various ways that it will eventually become hard to keep track of some data. Do not fear! You can simply 'refresh' your Empire at any time by copying over your current data and Empire to a clean sheet of paper as is needed.

Poker Squares - Using the same 25 cards, players compete to score the most points by making Poker hands both vertically and horizontally on a 5x5 grid.

Equipment:

Quadrant Z - A paper and pencil game of galactic warfare. How will you win -- by occupying the most of the galaxy, by capturing your enemy's home base star, or by completely destroying your enemy?

Designer: Derek Hohls

boardgames.za.net/gamesbook/mygames/quad-zWebArchive

The objective of the game is to conquer the galaxy - either by occupying the most stars; or by capturing the opponent's home base star, or by destroying the opponent's forces.

The game itself is played on a 10x10 grid -- each player has a copy of the grid. Using a point-based allocation system, players place stars and ships throughout the galaxy. During play, stars & ships will be discovered, new ships will be built, and combat will take place.

A player wins the either by occupying the most stars; or by capturing the opponent's home base star, or by destroying all the opponent's forces. If a player still has points in stock, but has no ships left at the end of the current turn, his forces are still considered destroyed.

Robot Maze Race - Each player tries to program their robot to maneuver through a disorganized warehouse without bumping into too may crates or walls on the way. An entry into the About.com: 2005 Deduction Game Design Competition.

Designer: Tim Mayse-Lillig

Publisher:About.com: 2005 Deduction Game Design Competition

Equipment: Each player needs a pencil and a sheet of paper marked as follows:

  • Two 10x10 grids of squares, each grid should have rows labeled with A at the top through J at the bottom. Columns should be labeled with 1 at the left to 10 at the right. These grids will be referred to as your secret grid (the maze your opponent is trying to navigate) and your open grid (where you are trying to navigate the maze made by your opponent). You should not show your paper to your opponent at any time in the game.

  • Space to write down your robot's program each turn.

  • Space to mark your robot's health.

Scribe - A pen and paper game where players try to form 'glyphs' on nine 9x9 mini grids. Wherever you leave your mark will determine where you play next! Capture the most mini grids and win.

Designer: Mark Steere

Publisher:Mark Steere Games

Scribe is a brand new pen and paper game for two players. The board is easy enough to draw although a printable version is available atmarksteeregames.com. Nine 9x9 mini grids together form one super grid. The two players, '+' and 'O,' take turns marking squares, one square per turn, until the entire super grid is filled. On his first turn, the player can claim any square on the super grid. The mini grid of his last move is treated as a map. The square he last claimed points to the mini grid in which he must make his next move. By marking the squares in the grid, players attempt to form one of the 19 'glyphs' that are outlined in the rules. Each glyph is worth the number of dots that compose it. When a mini grid is completely filled, the glyph points are tallied and the high score wins. Whoever wins the majority of the nine mini grids wins overall.

Scribe is perfectly balanced so that if played randomly, neither the first nor second move player will have an advantage. No draws of course.

'I haven't had a chance to play Scribe yet although I've been getting a lot of positive feedback. If anybody in the SF Bay area is interested, let's get together and play.' -- Mark Steere,marksteeregames.com

  • 22 stones (The playing stones are not required. The players may draw 22 circles in 2 groups of 11 on a piece of paper. Then the players cross out the circles instead of taking the stones out.)

  • 1 six-sided die

  • 1 coin

From the game's designer:

Another classic from the basement. As far as I can recall this is the first game I created that I actually committed to paper. I believe I created this game in 1992 or 1993. Based loosely on a mathematical game called Tsianshidsi,Tako is a silly time wasting game. Enjoy!
