  You should always have a good firewall/virus protection on your computer, when you download mods at any site no matter what other people say to you about that or this site is safe.
  In the end you have the final decision about what site you want to visit.
  Mods can sometimes alter the Rome TW, so that you can't play it normally and a good example of such mod is the Viking Invasion 2. The most mods does add/change something to the game play in Rome TW.

  One of the best mods at the moment is probably Roma Surrectum 2! As far as I know you can start the vanilla version and Roma Surrectum 2 without changes!

  Most (if not all) new mods (i.e. made in the last 4-5 years) use a separate modfolder, so they have no effect on your standard RTW files. This is stated in any mod's download page, otherwise you should ask about it before downloading. What they offer can range from a couple of extra units or minor changes in battle stats to a complete overhaul of the game, in the same or a different era.   To give a completely random example, 'The Greek Wars' takes the action to the 4th century BC, in an enlarged map of southern Greece, where 11 city-states vie for supremacy. Other mods, like Roma Surrectum 2, Europa Barbarorum, XGM, etc. are set in the same age as RTW but are given a lot more depth (and often difficulty) than the original game.

  Ive looked at RS mod, it changes the whole vanilla game so i dont want to play it.
  Ive also tried downloading the Troy: Total War. But i couldnt get it to work.
  im looking for a really good mod that either adds to the original rome gameplay or changes an aspect of it.

  I would suggest the Extended Greek Mod (XGM). It doesn't change the game as much as other total conversions (it mostly tries to stay true to the vanilla style), but it adds a lot to the gameplay.
  Or rather, if you want the original RTW with something new thrown in, you could try Amazon Total War, which adds some Amazon factions for a change.

  just downloaded XGM, i like that its a seperate game and still allows me to play vanilla, its mods like this that im looking for
