Whenever I see this book sitting in my mother's bookshelf, I pick this up and read it once. In the past five years I have read this at least five times. This is a timeless classic, a totally different rendition of a story we have all heard, the Mahabharata.

I think this is the simplest way Mahabharatha has been ever told. Narrating the story from Bhima's point of view, MT stripped off the divine powers from the characters and presented them as mortal human beings with emotions. So you don't get to see Krishna supplying an infinitely long sari to save Draupadi or King Jarasandha's body rejoining and coming back to life whichever way Bhima tries to tear him into two. A very good transformation of the epic Mahabharata. A different view at the classic taking out the supernatural element was a pleasant surprise. The book takes readers through the Mahabharatha as narrated by the Second Pandava, the strongest of them all, Bhimasena. There are so many interpretations and translations on Mahabharatha and Ramayana world wide. Every new translation adds something to the original story. This particular novel foregrounds the Mahabharatha story from the point of view of the 'real hero', Bhima. There is nothing unusual in looking into that epic from that angle. This one offers an interesting take. The entire Mahabharata is narrated by Bhima. It is curious how the author has interpreted the feelings of Bhima as he is shown to live in the shadows of Arjuna. I also like it that the character is shown to be unburdened by thinking and lives an almost instinctive life. It is also interesting how the author weaves in narratives around lesser known characters like Hidimbi. Top notch book for me!

If there's one thing I've realised after reading M.T.Vasudevan Nair's Randamoozham (English translation by Gita Krishnankutty) is that there is no one interpretation of the Mahabharata. There have been numerous re-tellings so far, from the PoV of so many characters and yet, every time I read it I come away with a different feeling and a different understanding of the characters. Hats off to this genuis. Such a brave attempt it is to tell the entire story from a purely human prespective and that too from a very less acclaimed hero in mahabharata, the Bhima.May be its is true that there is a hero in each one of us, after all life is a struggle and everyone you see around is fighting to his/her best.

I bought this book after hearing lots of good comments about this book. But, the book was far better than what I had expected. M.T Sir has narrated Mahabharatha in a different angle. We can see the real hero, Bhima in every page. Every time I read a well written version of the Mahabharata, I respect the original epic even more. How many works can lay claim to so many renditions centuries after the original version? M.T. is a legend at resurrecting unsung heroes from myths and fables and he does it again. But against popular opinion, I never felt that this was just Bheem's story. Bheeman; his view point about maha bharata and some really interesting perspective and imagination from the incredibly talented author makes this one a classic :). Some people can't digest the ending but it is worth reading and it is easily one of the best book that I have read till now.

Magnum Opus! MT's talent to spot the untold story remarkably comes out in this monumental retelling of an iconic epic. The icing on the cake is the new version of Bhimsen getting embarrased by Karna in the midst of war. As justiifed by the author in the epilogue, only MT can see such nuances of a story untold.

Randamoozham (English: Second Chance) is a 1984 Malayalam novel by Indian author M. T. Vasudevan Nair, widely credited as his masterpiece.[2] The work won the Vayalar Award, given for the best literary work in Malayalam, in 1985.[3] It also won the Muttathu Varkey Award in 1994. The novel has been translated to multiple languages. It was translated into English as Second Turn in 1997. Another English translation by Gita Krishnankutty published in 2013 is titled Bhima: Lone Warrior.[4][5]

The novel is a retelling of the Indian epicMahabharata from the perspective of Bhima, the second Pandava. The story deviates from the traditional Mahabharata story as it avoids the divine elements of the ancient epic and re-represent the characters and events realistically. One of the reasons critics cite for the novel's cult following is its revisionism, that was a first time in Malayalam literature. The book was translated to Tamil by Kurunjivelan as 'Irandaam Idam' with cover illustration by Trotsky Marudu.

A film adaptation starring Mohanlal is scheduled for 2020; it is set to become India's most expensive film production at US$ 155 million and the most expensive non-English-language film.[6]

Plot[edit]

The story begins with the incident of Mahaprasthanika Parva where the Pandavas leave for the pilgrimage to Himalayas forsaking all the worldly possessions. The story runs through the eyes of Bhima who faces seemingly severe frustrations as a young man. Always destined to be second to his weak elder brother Yudhishthira in seniority and younger brother Arjuna in fame and popularity, Bhima is not given his due as the main architect of the Pandava victory over their cousins Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war, despite killing all the 100 Kauravas. The book unravels all the hardship and dilemmas encountered by Bhima which remain unnoticed. The book explores the emotions of the mighty Pandava as a son, brother, husband and father. The book brings to light the affection that he holds for his wife draupadi and how unnoticed his acts of love remains. The story questions the mourning of Arjuna's son, Abhimanyu when he is killed during the battle while trying to break the Chakravyuh formation, while Bhima's son, Ghatokkach is led to his death by sacrificing his life to save Arjuna's life and his sacrifice too remains unsung and everyone enjoys the happiness of saving Arjuna's life. Towards the end of the book he is shown as the only husband who seems to stop trying to be with darupadi at her last moment during their pilgrimage.

Film adaptation[edit]

In 2011, director Hariharan announced his plan to adapt Randamoozham to screen, scripted by M. T. Vasudevan Nair himself with Mohanlal cast to play Bhima.[7] Later, V. A. Shrikumar Menon took the project again with Mohanlal in the lead, it was announced in April 2017 that the film adaptation will be produced by B. R. Shetty.[8][9] With its ₹1000 crore (₹10 billion) budget, the film is expected to be the most expensive film in Indian cinema, and the most expensive non-English language film. The film will be shot in two parts. The first part is planned to be released in 2020.[10][11][12]
